Illinois Nursing License

In Illinois, Nurses are licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). The IDFPR page for Nursing Professions outlines what positions they license for, contains licensee application forms, resources and publications, laws and rules, and board information.

Illinois Board of Nursing

Nurses came under the jurisdiction of the IDFPR upon its creation in 1917. The regulatory Act includes both "practical", "registered" and "advanced practice" nurses within its scope and includes nursing in all of its specialties. The Board of Nursing has thirteen members appointed by the Secretary, consisting of four advanced practice nurses, three nursing educator representatives, two registered nurses, one licensed practical nurse, one nursing administrator, one nurse and one public member. The Board's duties include making recommendations on the adoption of revisions to the rules and regulations necessary to carry out the provisions of the Act, conducting hearings and disciplinary conferences upon charges calling for discipline of a licensee, and recommending approval or denial of nursing education programs.

National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN)

The NCSDBN works with the Illinois Board of Nursing (under the IDPFR) and all other state Nursing Regulatory Boards to develop appropriate nursing regulations and examinations for the nursing profession. This is the organization responsible for creating the NCLEX exam you must take for licensure.

The Mission

NCSBN empowers and supports nursing regulators in their mandate to protect the public.

National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX)

The National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX)  assists nursing regulatory boards in evaluating qualifications of nurses for licensure. NCSBN is dedicated to developing psychometrically sound and legally defensible nurse licensure and certification examinations consistent with current entry-level practice. The NCLEX is the world’s premier licensure exam and uses computerized adaptive testing (CAT) technology to deliver the exam, ensuring a valid and reliable measurement of nursing competence.

Candidates will take the examination at test centers operated by Pearson VUE.

The Lake Land College Nursing Program will provide you with details about the NCLEX testing process and can help you with any questions you might have. Checking with you instructors will save you time and frustration in the NCLEX testing process!
